    Why I Wrote This Book

    I’ve been an athlete since about age 8, and competing—whether it’s with myself or against a field of others—has always been part of my identity. When I found Paleo in 2009, my health and performance improved dramatically. At the time, I was racing mountain bikes and doing triathlons. Then, I became a competitive CrossFitter, most notably participating at the 2013 SoCal Regionals with Team Sea of Green.

    This past year has seen me shift my focus a bit to Olympic weightlifting, and in August, I qualified for the American Open. In short, I eat a performance Paleo diet. It fuels me, helps reduce inflammation, provides me boundless energy, and supports my performance gains. I’m on a mission to show you how to do the same.

    What sort of stuff is in the book? This book is centered around the 100+ amazing recipes I’ve developed for you. It’s got seven fueling strategies (when training falls at different times during the day), and fifty meal combinations (think of it like the beginnings of a meal plan). The macros for each recipe are provided. This book discusses performance nutrition in a limited manner, so if you’re after the detailed rationale behind why Paleo is awesome for athletes, I recommend also picking up my ebook, The Paleo Athlete.

    Do I have to be an athlete for this book to work? No. First, it’s really hard to exactly define who is an athlete. It’s my opinion that if you have specific performance goals, work hard at your sport and spend significant time each week training for it, this book is for you. You don’t have to be a pro or the best of the best.

    Is there anyone who this book isn’t for? If you’re a professional athlete with incredibly specific nutrition needs or you’re someone who isn’t ready to base his / her nutrition on real, nutrient-dense foods, this book probably isn’t for you.

    Is this book 100% squeaky-clean strict Paleo? No. Ultra-strict Paleo templates call for avoidance of salt, extreme reduction in carbohydrate intake, and never eating dairy of any kind. When performance-minded people blindly follow strict Paleo, the rate of failure and abandonment is high. Why? They haven’t properly tailored Paleo principles to their training demands. As such, you’ll see salt, carb-dense veggies and even some full-fat dairy like ghee in some recipes. And, you’ll even see the occasional option for things like whey protein, white potatoes and white rice. These may not be right for every person, but it’s my stance that if these foods are not problematic for you and may help your performance and recovery, they shouldn’t be 100% off the menu forever.
